Two employees have been suspended after being forced not to wear the hijab at a private law firm.

The case is currently under review by the Commission of Conciliation and Mediation (CCM). The employees are represented by lawyers Imteaz Mamoojee and Nadeem Hyderkhan.

The employer’s lawyers were absent from two scheduled hearings. According to lawyer Hyderkhan, Mauritian law protects each individual’s religious freedom and practice, as guaranteed by the Constitution.

However, he emphasized that the Workers Bill should be amended to better safeguard employees’ rights.

Mauritian Labour Minister Reza Uteem also commented on the case, stating that workers’ rights must be respected and reaffirming that the Constitution guarantees religious freedom.

By all means one should be free to dress as one pleases. But, please do not call it religious dress when it is merely a cultural attire.
