ASP Arrested by FCC in Rs 4.5 Million Reward Money Case
In the ongoing investigation into the Reward Money affair, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Faraaz Mooniaruth, a former head of the now-defunct Force Crime Intelligence Unit, was arrested early this morning by the Financial Crimes Commission (FCC).
Authorities also raided his home in Plaine-des-Papayes, where they confiscated several documents.
The case gained public attention after the arrest of former Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Lilram Deeal.
Deeal, who previously led the anti-terrorism unit, is suspected of involvement in misappropriating public funds related to the Reward Money system — payments made to police informants.
The FCC accuses Deeal of holding Rs 4.5 million — believed to be proceeds from Reward Money — in a bank account he managed with his wife as of June 28.
These funds were reportedly received by an Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (ADSU).
In May 2021, this unit made a record drug seizure at Pointe-aux-Canonniers, confiscating 219 packages of heroin and 26 packages of hashish, totaling 244 kilograms.
The street value of the drugs was estimated at Rs 3.3 billion.
The anti-drug squad’s investigation led to the arrest of brothers Ritesh and Nitiraj Gurroby. Notably, at the time of the drug bust, Deeal was not part of the ADSU but was assigned to the Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU).
Faraaz Mooniaruth is scheduled to appear in court this Thursday. He has retained lawyer Hishaam Oozeer.
