The reopening of the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (ADSU) in Plaine-Verte was announced on 15th July at an event organized by the Islamic Cultural College Vallée-des-Prêtres (ICCVDP). The event marked the college’s 20th anniversary with a peaceful march aimed at raising awareness about the rapidly spreading drug problem in the country.

The march, led by teachers from the college in collaboration with ICCVDP, drew attention from political figures.

At the conclusion of the march at the Dr. Idriss Goomany Center in Plaine-Verte, Port Louis Mayor Adam Aslam Hossenally announced the unit’s reopening.

The mayor stated, “I have spoken with Shakeel Mohamed about re-establishing the ADSU in Plaine-Verte. It is vital to take action against the drug problem.”

Shakeel Mohamed, the Member of Parliament, confirmed he was the driving force behind this initiative.

He said he worked with police commissioner and Prime Minister to restart the unit, which had been closed by the previous government.

Mohamed also mentioned plans for similar units in other areas, such as Roche-Bois and Baie-du-Tombeau.

He clarified that he was speaking as a MP, not in a ministerial capacity. The location for the Plaine-Verte ADSU has already been identified and just needs renovations before operations can begin.

The President of the Republic ended the event by expressing support for the initiative. He emphasized the government’s commitment to fighting drug abuse and urged parents to be responsible.

“The fight starts at home. We must be relentless with criminals involved in drug trafficking, while showing empathy and support for victims,” he said.

The peaceful march also featured Sam Lauthan, director of the National Agency for Drug Control. He highlighted the importance of slowing the spread of drugs and increasing prevention efforts within society.
