Over Rs 50 Million in Reward Money Paid to Informants Before 2024 Elections
In the two months leading up to the upcoming general elections, the total amount of reward money paid to informants has been notably high. This was revealed by Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam during a parliamentary session on Tuesday, July 15.
PM confirmed that more than Rs 50 million was distributed as reward payments during September and October 2024.
The Prime Minister explained that the reward system within the police is based on factors such as the type and circumstances of each operation, the number of arrests made, and the quantity and value of drugs and evidence seized.
Here are the specific figures for reward payments made to police officers and informants:
- July 2024: Rs 4,586,450
- August 2024: Rs 368,900
- September 2024: Rs 11,242,900
- October 2024: Rs 38,932,450
- November and December 2024: No payments
Given the large sums involved and concerns about potential misuse or abuse of reward funds within the police force, the Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam assured that the Financial Crimes Commission (FCC) is currently reviewing the procedures for disbursing these rewards to officers and informants.
