Mauritius Spends $8.7 Million Annually on Safe City Camera Program
The annual cost to operate and maintain the Safe City Project is $8.7 million, the Prime Minister, Navin Ramgoolam, announced in Parliament on July 15. As of June 2025, Mauritius Telecom has received $98,952,549.45 for the project.
The project involves installing 4,000 smart surveillance cameras and 300 smart traffic cameras. In response to a parliamentary question, the Prime Minister confirmed that the total number of cameras remains unchanged.
All 4,000 surveillance cameras have been installed, but some adjustments are needed: four cameras are damaged, and 24 are awaiting relocation.
Regarding the traffic cameras, installation is ongoing. So far, 157 of the 300 cameras have been installed.
The remaining 143 cameras will be installed after the current work is completed, which is expected by the end of September 2025.
