Child Behavior Disorders Cases Jump to 440 in First Half 2025

A troubling wave of distress grips our children. Between January and June 2025, 440 young lives have been marked by behavioral struggles—each one a reminder of a future at risk. Arianne Navarre-Marie, Minister of Gender Equality and Family Well-being, revealed this heartbreaking reality to Parliament on Tuesday, 15th July, shining a light on a crisis that demands urgent attention.

Out of these cases, 302 involved mild behavioral concerns. The children and their parents in these cases are receiving psychological support.

Additionally, 138 children with more serious behavioral problems were referred to the Mauritius Probation and Aftercare Services, under the Office of the Prime Minister, to receive parental support.

Twenty-eight children are participating in the Child Mentoring Scheme.

Currently, consultations are ongoing with various stakeholders, including the Office of the Prime Minister, the Ombudsperson for Children, and the relevant ministry.

The goal is to develop a more professional and child rights-focused approach. A review of the Youth Rehabilitation Center (RYC) is also being considered.
