The humble home of three-year-old Jean Kylian in Karo Kalyptis stands as a quiet testament to love and resilience, where warmth and kindness gently break through modest walls. Despite the simple surroundings, the family’s love is profound. The grandmother, weary from years of hardship and loss, still manages a tender smile, hiding the weight of her suffering.

Little Jean Kylian clung to his grandmother, tears streaming down his face, torn between his fear of separation and the comfort of her embrace.

Inside a tidy living room, a portrait hangs on the wall, showing a young woman with the words “Rest in peace” beneath it — Jean Kylian’s mother.

The topic was carefully approached by l’Express team , balancing the need to inform with respect for the family’s grief.

Seeing the grandmother’s sadness, Jean Kylian’s aunt explained that his mother had advanced cancer when she was pregnant.

To avoid causing further pain, the conversation was shifted to Jean Kylian. His grandmother also visited the Social Security office in Astor Court, Port-Louis several times, seeking help for her grandson.

Unfortunately, each time she was told, “We can’t do anything about this paper.”

The birth certificate for Jean Kylian is incomplete — it has no surname or parent details.

The grandmother insisted, “My child is innocent.” Feeling helpless and exhausted. Suddenly overwhelmed, she broke down in tears, crying out, “My child is innocent.”

Her voice cracked, but her words seemed like a cry to anyone listening — the state, authorities, or whoever can help.

She is staying strong, for her grandson who sometimes calls her “grandmother,” sometimes “mother.” To Jean Kylian, those words are one and the same.

Next week, Jean Kylian will start preschool. Luckily, the school has no issue accepting him despite his incomplete documents.

His grandmother said she will do everything she can to ensure he gets a good education.

“I will keep working while my daughter takes care of him,” she said.

“The most important thing is his education.”

Before leaving, l’Express team briefly spoke with Jean Kylian. With a shy look, playing with Legos and exploring YouTube on his aunt’s phone. Despite his young age, he’s curious and clever.

A law firm in Port-Louis has contacted the family, showing interest in helping Jean Kylian. A first meeting is scheduled this week.

Calling on anyone willing to help this young boy, while he is waiting to be officially recognized by the government and receive social assistance.

Donations can be made to the grandmother’s account at SBM, account number 50300000040309.
