Income Support: 37,562 Eligible Beneficiaries for the Next 5 Years

A total of 37,562 people aged 60 to 65 are expected to qualify for the Income Support Allowance of Rs 10,000 per month for the next five years. This support will reach over 60% of individuals within this age group.

These figures were shared in the National Assembly on Tuesday, July 8, by Ashok Subron, the Minister of Social Security.

He was responding to a Private Notice Question from opposition leader Joe Lesjongard about the Income Support Allowance, a measure announced by Prime Minister Dr. Navin Ramgoolam on Friday, July 4.

The government plans to spend Rs 8.7 billion on the Income Support Allowance over the five-year period.

Minister Subron explained that three proposals were considered to determine the exact amount of the support. He also clarified the monthly income criteria needed for eligibility.

Opposition leader Lesjongard criticized the proposed amount, saying it is below the poverty line.

In response, Minister Subron stated that the current economic situation remains challenging.

He also announced that he would make a further statement in the Assembly regarding disability pensions.
