Metro Express: Suspect Arrested for 6 ATMs Vandalized, Rs 1.8M Damage

After weeks of careful investigation, police have stopped the criminal activities of a 44-year-old man suspected of vandalizing and stealing from ATMs at multiple Metro Express stations. The suspect was arrested Wednesday evening during a targeted operation in Camp Caval, Curepipe.

The Central Division’s Divisional Crime Intelligence Unit (DCIU), supported by the Mauritian Police Intervention Group (GIPM), raided an abandoned house on Allée Camphre where the man was hiding. He did not resist arrest. Despite a thorough search, no incriminating objects were found at the scene.

Police reports say the suspect admitted to six thefts at stations in St-Louis, Coromandel, and Trianon.

The damage caused is estimated in the millions of rupees, not because of the cash stolen but due to the value of the damaged equipment. For example, a single Add Value Vending Machine (AVVM) costs around Rs 1.8 million.

Surveillance cameras at the targeted stations show a masked, gloved individual armed with a crowbar, bypassing security measures to access cash.

The suspect also confessed to another theft at Palmerstone station on the night of May 19, involving a partner.

Their attempt was interrupted when security arrived. The accomplice, a 29-year-old unemployed man, was caught on the spot with Rs 4,460, gloves, and a medical mask. The 44-year-old suspect managed to escape but was later apprehended.

After appearing before the Curepipe court, he was remanded in custody at Vacoas Detention Centre, joining his accomplice already jailed.

Authorities continue their investigation and do not rule out the possibility of more thefts by the duo.
