Car Market: Record Sale of 7,304 Vehicles in June 2025

A new record was set with 7,304 vehicles sold in June, according to the National Land Transport Authority (NLTA). Since the start of the year, 22,800 vehicles have been registered, averaging about 200 per day.

Osman Mahomed, Minister of Transport, announced these figures on Monday, June 30, during a response to a Private Notice Question from opposition leader Joe Lesjongard.

Between 2014 and 2025, the number of vehicles on the road increased from 465,000 to 733,000 — a 58% rise — despite the introduction of the Metro Express transit system.

The Minister said that recent budget measures, including a 30% increase in registration fees for new and reconditioned vehicles, aim to slow this growth, which he described as uncontrollable.

He clarified that these measures are not intended to reduce the number of vehicles but to curb their rapid increase.

He also highlighted that the road tax, known locally as the declaration, has remained unchanged since 2008, even as inflation has continued to rise.

Additionally, he presented projections showing increased revenue from the transport sector from July this year to June 2026.

Regarding traffic congestion, Mahomed questioned the effectiveness of new infrastructure projects like the SAJ Bridge and the Ébène flyover, suggesting these developments have worsened traffic problems in Port-Louis and Ébène due to the rising number of vehicles.
