3 Arrested in Gas Decanting Operation in Baie-du-Tombeau

An illegal operation involving the transfer of liquefied household gas has been dismantled in Baie-du-Tombeau, near the police station on Avenue Rouillard. Authorities seized 12.3-kilo gas cylinders during the raid.
The operation was carried out by Sergeant Bundhooa’s team from the Special Patrol unit of Port-Louis North, following precise intelligence.
Police first observed suspect activity through discreet surveillance. Their suspicions grew as they noted several vehicles making repeated trips to the area to refuel directly into their tanks.
Gas Cylinders
During the raid, police caught two vehicles in the act of filling up, connected to compressors powered by the seized gas cylinders stored inside a workshop.
Officers confiscated the cylinders and equipment used for the illegal transfer.
Two drivers, both residents of Baie-du-Tombeau—including a taxi driver—were detained and admitted to the activity.
The workshop owner, identified as the main operator, was also arrested. The three suspects face charges for “Decanting Liquefied Petroleum Gas from Cylinders.”
This crackdown follows increased efforts to combat illegal gas transfers across the island. On June 11, a mechanic in Trois-Boutiques, Triolet, was fined after authorities found a vehicle being refilled with household gas in his garage.
