Support for 15,000 Seniors Aged 60-65 Under Review

A government committee gathered Wednesday 25th June at the Ministry of Social Integration headquarters in Port-Louis to discuss support mechanisms for people aged 60 to 65 who are unable to work due to health issues. Chaired by Minister Ashok Subron, the meeting focused on analyzing employment data for seniors and exploring targeted reforms to the pension system.
Statistics presented showed that, on average, 27% of those aged 60 to 65 are still employed.
The employment rate is higher among 60-61-year-olds at 39.6% and drops to 15.9% for those aged 64-65.
These figures suggest a need to review eligibility criteria for the old-age pension.
Currently, around 3,000 individuals aged 60 to 61 receive a monthly pension of Rs 15,000 until they turn 65.
The government estimates that about 15,000 people will benefit from this support each year.
However, several unions have raised concerns, arguing that these measures challenge principles of equality, universality, and dignity for all seniors.
