According to the latest ranking for 2025, Mauritius is the most peaceful country in Africa, ranking 26th worldwide. Botswana follows as Africa’s second most peaceful country, placed 43rd globally. Namibia ranks third on the continent, positioned 50th in the world.

This list is published by Business Insider Africa, based on the latest data from the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP).

The IEP’s annual Global Peace Index measures peace in 163 countries using 23 indicators, including safety, conflict levels, and military spending.

While global headlines often highlight unrest, the 2025 report shows that some African nations remain peaceful.

However, overall, Sub-Saharan Africa’s peace score declined slightly this year, with an average decrease of 0.17%.

Regionally, the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) continue to be the least peaceful, hosting four of the ten least peaceful countries worldwide.

South Asia experienced the largest decline in peace among regions, mainly due to worsening conditions in Bangladesh and Pakistan.

Here are the top 10 most peaceful African countries in 2025:

  1. Mauritius 26th
  2. Botswana 43rd
  3. Namibia 50th
  4. The Gambia 55th

  6. Madagascar 59th
