70% of Contract Car Licenses Issued Over the Last 10 Years

The National Land Transport Authority (NLTA) reports that Mauritius currently holds 11,153 licenses for “contract cars.” Notably, 7,781 of these licenses—about 70%—were issued over the past ten years. This rapid increase has raised questions.
Before 2014, only 3,372 contract car licenses existed, indicating a more cautious licensing approach, according to Transport Minister Osman Mahomed, who made these remarks during a parliamentary session on June 24.
The minister also highlighted that the NLTA has not conducted any studies to assess the actual demand or need for these services.
There is no registry to track who recommended or approved the contract car licenses.
Furthermore, obtaining specific data on the number of licenses issued for operations with hotels and tour operators remains difficult.
