Over 30 Fines & 2 Boats Seized for Illegal Swimming with Cetaceans

In June, Authorities issued over 30 fines and confiscated two boats in the North for illegal swimming with whales and dolphins. This growing activity harms marine mammals and disrupts their natural behavior.

Those caught are facing serious penalties, including fines of up to Rs 25 million and prison sentences of up to five years. Since the start of 2023, authorities have recorded more than 130 such violations.

The National Coast Guard (NCG) has increased patrols to combat this illegal practice. ASP Purmanund from the NCG Western Unit emphasized the importance of stricter enforcement to protect cetaceans.
