Rs8 Million to Expand Autism Support in Primary Schools

The education system continues to support children with disabilities, including those with autism. This was confirmed by Education Minister Mahend Gungapersad in response to a question from Deputy Anabelle Savabaddy, who expressed concern about the lack of specialized classes in primary schools.

Currently, 69 autistic children attend 12 primary schools equipped with integrated units for specialized education, known as Special Education Needs (SEN).

These units are led by trained educators and provide various services, including therapy, hot meals, electronic tablets, and support from teaching assistants and carers.

Additionally, children benefit from free transportation.

About 30 autistic children integrated into regular primary classes also receive assistance from aides and take part in extracurricular activities such as music, sports, and educational programs.

All these children have access to therapy services at seven resource development centers dedicated to special educational needs.

The 2025-26 budget allocates Rs 8 million to upgrade these seven centers and establish five new units in primary schools. The process for setting up these units has already begun.
