Mauritius’s Stenio Momus Tops 12 Slam Poets, Heads to Africa Finals

Stenio Momus, known as Kanbi, will represent Mauritius at the upcoming African Slam Poetry Cup in Guinea. The qualification event took place on Saturday, June 14, at the Nelson Mandela Centre for African Culture in La Tour Koenig, where about a dozen local and Rodrigues-based slam poets competed fiercely.
The contest was emotional and intense, showcasing powerful performances and artistic commitment.
After a thrilling day, Stenio Momus emerged as the winner, impressing both the audience and the jury with his heartfelt and impactful poetry rooted in his personal experiences.
Cledio Agathe finished second, and Jeckel took third place. These finalists had successfully qualified through earlier competitions in Rodrigues and are now set to represent Mauritius on the national stage.
The event drew a passionate crowd and a jury of professionals and slam enthusiasts. The atmosphere was electric as each artist delivered their best.
Lafleur Malade, the ambassador of the African Slam Poetry Cup in Mauritius, praised the event’s success and emphasized the need for sponsorship to fund Momus’s travel to Guinea, where he will compete on behalf of Mauritius.
With the victory, Stenio Momus is preparing to travel to Conakry, Guinea, for the continental finals scheduled from September 28 to October 6.
He expressed his excitement and commitment, saying he plans to seek support from experienced Mauritian slam poets who have previously competed in Africa to help him prepare.
Stelio Pierre Louis, who accompanied the Rodrigues delegation, praised the performers, stating, “Tonight, Rodrigues has made Mauritius proud on the slam stage.”
Mauritius is now counting on Momus to represent the country with pride at this major pan-African event.
