Mauritius Launches 4 Daily Coffee Tours at Chamarel Plantation

Rogers Hospitality has launched the Coffee Tour Experience at Chamarel Seven Colored Earth Geopark, offering visitors an immersive journey into the world of Chamarel coffee. Located in the southwestern highlands of Mauritius, the Chamarel Coffee Plantation is the island’s only remaining active coffee farm.
The tour provides a unique, educational way to learn about local coffee, blending agriculture, heritage, and culture.
Led by guides, visitors start at the plantation’s visitor center and then walk 300 meters through the lush site.

Along the way, they see each stage of coffee production, from cultivation on volcanic soil and hand-picking to environmentally friendly farming practices.
Thierry Montocchio, CEO of Rogers Hospitality, explains: “We believe that tourism in Mauritius is most meaningful when rooted in our local environment.
Chamarel Coffee is a perfect example—an exceptional product from a unique terroir, crafted with authentic, preserved techniques.

Through the Chamarel Coffee Tour, we aim to offer a meaningful local experience while supporting sustainable development and creating value for our island.”
The tour continues into the processing area, where visitors observe fermentation, washing, sun drying, and roasting. Each step is explained, highlighting the expertise needed to enhance the quality of each coffee bean.
Afterward, guests can enjoy a tasting session outdoors, savoring an espresso or local coffee.

The experience is enriched by insights from Thomas Lehroux, a passionate barista and roaster. He shares his knowledge of coffee aromas, roasting profiles, and the craft of creating exceptional coffee, giving visitors a deeper appreciation of the product’s complexity.
The tour also explores other regional plants such as cacao, vanilla, and banana, which influence the coffee’s flavor profile. The Chamarel plantation remains the only active coffee farm on the island.
The experience concludes with a cupping session—an expert sensory analysis method—that allows visitors to explore the nuances of different coffees, sharpen their senses, and learn to identify specific terroir characteristics.
Guided tours run daily at 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 451 8500. The price for residents is Rs 500 per adult and Rs 250 per child.
