Mauritius: 1 Merchant Scammed in Facebook Furniture Fake Profile

Despite many warnings about online scams, some Mauritians still trust fake profiles that trick them into giving away money. Recently, a well-known businesswoman specializing in a niche requiring expertise fell victim to such a scam. She was contacted by a profile with a foreign-sounding female name on Facebook, claiming to sell household items and furniture.

The victim sent money to this seller to buy the products. However, when she went to the address provided in the North of Mauritius to collect her items, she found the house locked and no one answered her calls.

It was only then that she realized she had been scammed.

She had paid for items that were actually downloaded from various online sites, including a shop based in Dubai.

She also did not suspect the suspicious Quebec phone number used by her “correspondent.”

This scammer profile is believed to have operated in Uganda as well.

In some cases, other victims who tried to recover their furniture faced violent attacks, being ambushed by the scammers.

In Mauritius, the merchant was not the only victim. Experts warn that always verifying and double-checking seller profiles and online photos can help prevent falling for increasingly sophisticated scams.
