The announcement has sent shockwaves through La Réunion’s economy. Brasseries de Bourbon confirmed that local Coca-Cola production will stop by 2026, ending over 30 years of manufacturing on the island.

Phoenix Beverages Limited (PBL), a Mauritian company and subsidiary of IBL Group, owner of Edena Boissons, announced on Friday, 13th June, that it will officially resume production and distribution of Coca-Cola products in 2026.

This move is part of Coca-Cola’s broader strategy to centralize production for overseas territories in the Indian Ocean region.

As a result, manufacturing on La Réunion will cease. The decision aims to unify regional production but raises concerns about its economic and social impact.

Local authorities worry about job losses, the loss of local expertise, and new opportunities.

During a meeting of the regional council’s permanent committee, members expressed concern, noting that this decision could cut 50% of Brasseries de Bourbon’s production, which is significant given the market size and competitiveness.

Starting in 2026, Coca-Cola products will be imported from outside the territory, likely from Mauritius or South Africa.

The regional government has called on IBL to ensure the preservation of all jobs related to Coca-Cola activity on La Réunion and to maintain the local value-added production.
