Mauritius Appoints 5 New Human Rights Division Members

Human Rights Division of the National Human Rights Commission has appointed Satyajit Boolell as its new president. Boolell, the former Director of Public Prosecutions, shared his experiences of pressure under the previous regime in his book “Résister,” written by Alain Gordon-Gentil.
He will be joined by four members: former colleague Touria Prayag, clinical psychologist Vijay Ramanjooloo, communications expert Jean-Marie Richard, and lawyer Mélany Nagen.
Touria Prayag holds a master’s degree in linguistics from the University of Edinburgh. She was the long-time editor of the English supplement of “L’Express” and has authored three books:
Provisional Charges: The Untold Human Stories, #BLD: When Mauritius Lost Its Bedside Manners, and A to Z: An Encyclopedia of Scandals in Paradise.
Vijay Ramanjooloo, a clinical psychologist, is no stranger to the Human Rights Division. He served on the team for four years alongside the late Hervé Lassémillante, who was the division’s former president.
Ramanjooloo recalled Lassémillante’s words: “Let’s not dwell on our success but focus on the work,” expressing his intention to continue the work inspired by him.
Jean-Marie Richard, a communications specialist, authored Cachotteries, Propos d’outre geôle, a book about police arbitrariness and judicial harassment he experienced over several years.
Shortly after these appointments were announced, the opposition leader announced he would challenge the nomination of Prayag, citing her husband Ashok’s appointment as chairman of the SICOM board.
