“No Parliamentarian Should Receive a Pension Before Age 60,” Says Lobine

Khushal Lobine, leader of the New Democrats and deputy for Alliance du Changement in constituency 15 (La Caverne/Phoenix), calls for a national debate on universal pensions. He also advocates for a phased system based on beneficiaries’ income levels.
In a Facebook post, Lobine addressed the age of eligibility for the universal pension, which will gradually be raised to 65.
He emphasized that “no parliamentarian should benefit from a pension before age 60. Pensions are not a privilege but a support meant for those truly in need.”
He explained that he is speaking out as a representative of the people and leader of the New Democrats because he has listened to voters across the country.
Lobine insisted that pension support should reflect real-life circumstances, “not just be an empty decision on paper.”
Lobine proposed reforming the pension system with a “dual track pension age,” which he considers “more fair, responsible, and humane.”
Under this plan, certain groups could start receiving a pension at 60: stay-at-home parents, manual workers, and those who began working very young.
He added that those with stable, comfortable incomes wouldn’t need a full pension at 60—they could receive a reduced pension instead.
Lobine also highlighted the importance of allowing people who choose to work until 65 to do so, viewing this not as exclusion but as a matter of responsibility.
