Durable Fishing: Rs 200,000 Compensation for Fishers Aged 65+

To better manage the fishing industry, prevent overfishing, and protect marine resources, a new policy will take effect. Starting soon, fishers aged 65 and older who still fish with nets will be required to surrender their fishing permits. In exchange, they will receive a financial compensation of Rs 200,000.
This measure was announced in the 2025/26 Budget and is part of a broader effort to conserve fish stocks and marine ecosystems.
Individual fishers will get Rs 200,000, while cooperative societies involved in fishing will receive Rs 300,000.
