Good news for students who are already benefiting from the Free Tertiary Exemption Scheme (FTES) at public universities: they will be able to finish their studies for free, even though the scheme is officially ending with the 2025-26 Budget.

In an interview with Défi Plus, Higher Education Minister Dr. Kaviraj Sukon reassured those affected.

He said, “Students currently benefiting from FTES in public institutions will continue to receive it, in line with our commitments.”

He also emphasized the government’s position: “We remain committed to the principle of free education and hope to restore it when economic conditions improve.”

The announcement of the scheme’s end in the 2025-26 Budget sparked concern.

The FTES, introduced by the previous government, allowed students to earn their bachelor’s degree without paying university fees.

However, this free education was only available during their first enrollment at that level.

Starting with the 2025-26 academic year, only students enrolled full-time will be eligible for free tuition.

The government has promised a fair and smooth transition, respecting students’ rights and supporting all those affected.
