Chagos Deal Challenge: 2 Chagossians Fight Back with UN Complaint
Bertrice Pompé, a passionate advocate for Chagossians’ rights, has officially challenged the recent treaty between Mauritius and the UK over the Chagos Islands.
She stated, “There’s nothing for the Chagossians in this treaty signed between Mauritius and the UK.”
Last Thursday 5th June, alongside Bernadette Dugasse, Pompé submitted an official legal complaint to the United Nations Human Rights Committee.
The complaint questions the legality and legitimacy of the bilateral agreement reached between London and Port Louis.
Pompé argued that the voices of the Chagossian people were not considered during the negotiations.
The complaint is also including a request for provisional measures, asking the UN Committee to instruct Mauritius to suspend ratification of the treaty scheduled for 2025, until the case is fully reviewed.
The treaty, signed on May 22, 2025, is described as historic. It recognizes Mauritius’s sovereignty over the entire archipelago, including Diego Garcia, and allows Chagossians to return to live on their islands.
