Beau Bassin Prison Officer, 1 Year in Service, Busted with Drugs

On Friday at around 10:20 a.m., Muhammad Zuhair Bhugel, a 26-year-old officer with the Prison Security Squad, was arrested at Beau Bassin Central Prison. Residing in Goodlands, Bhugel has been part of the unit since 2024.

He was caught with two small packages wrapped in black latex, found in his pocket. Following suspicion, authorities conducted a thorough search, uncovering:

• Two wrapped packages
• 9.1 grams of dried leaves
• A small amount of white powder
• 15 psychoactive tablets

A second search, carried out by the Anti-Drug Smuggling Unit (ADSU) in his locker at the staff changing room, revealed additional items:

• Two more pellets
• 40 cigarettes
• Six SIM cards

The investigation is ongoing to determine how the drugs and items ended up in the officer’s possession. Authorities have not yet commented on possible accomplices or motives.
