Rs10 Million Luxury Thefts in North Solved by Police; 2 Suspects Arrested

Police have solved two recent break-in cases involving high-value objects in the north of Mauritius. The investigations were led by the Criminal Investigation Division units from Goodlands and Grand-Baie, along with the Northern Divisional Crime Intelligence Unit. Two suspects have been arrested and are in custody, while their accomplices remain at large.

First incident: a burglary reported on May 21 in Grand-Gaube

The first break-in happened at a bungalow in Butte-à-l’Herbe, Calodyne. The owner, a 64-year-old consultant currently abroad, reported that between May 19 at 1 p.m. and May 21 at 8 a.m., unidentified individuals broke into the house by forcing open a sliding aluminum door leading to a bathroom.

Once inside, they shattered the safe and stole valuables worth around Rs 4 million.

The loot included five gold tablets, 57 gold coins, Mauritian rupees, and various bottles of whisky, wine, gin, Amarula, and a pack of beer.

Second incident: a major theft in Péreybère

A few days earlier, on May 17, a director reported a break-in at his home during the night of May 16-17.

The burglars forced open the main door and stole several valuable items, including three smartphones, a wallet, headphones, binoculars, a torch, and a safe containing gold jewelry, silver items, and precious stones such as necklaces, earrings, and bracelets.

They also took official documents like passports and driving licenses. The total value of this theft is estimated at Rs 6.2 million.

Breakthrough in the case: arrests on May 27

The investigation took a significant turn on May 27 when police arrested two suspects known to authorities.

During questioning, they confessed to their involvement in both burglaries. They revealed that two other accomplices, still at large, had taken the stolen goods.

The suspects admitted that they each received Rs 10,000 and Rs 20,000 in cash for their part and spent the money partying.

The two suspects are currently detained under police supervision. They are already wanted in connection with other cases, including previous thefts and traffic offenses.

Police continue to search for the remaining suspects and recover the stolen items.
