On World Environment Day, Mauritius Telecom (MT) announced the launch of a new electronic waste recycling campaign called “Anou Preserv Nou Planet.” The initiative, carried out through MT’s CSR arm, the Mauritius Telecom Foundation (MTF), aims to strengthen the company’s environmental commitments by encouraging the public to recycle old electronic devices.

Starting this Wednesday, 4th June, collection points will be available at all Telecom Shops across Mauritius and Rodrigues.

The public is invited to bring in used mobile phones, tablets, and batteries for recycling. These items will be collected by a local company specialized in electronic waste recycling.

After processing locally, the waste will be shipped abroad for treatment that complies with international environmental standards.

Sarat Lallah, Chairman of Mauritius Telecom, explained that this campaign is part of a broader sustainable development strategy.

“Our goal is to educate the public on proper disposal practices. Too often, phones and batteries are thrown into nature or regular trash, which is toxic and dangerous for the environment,” he said in a statement.

A United Nations report published in 2024 highlighted that over 60 million tonnes of electronic waste were generated worldwide in 2023.

However, only 22% of this waste was properly recycled, underscoring the need for increased awareness and better waste management practices.
