Mauritius Tamil Centre Regains Land After 2023 Dispute

The Mauritius Tamil Cultural Centre Trust has regained its land in Réduit Triangle. The restitution contract was handed over, on the 29th May, by Minister Shakeel Mohamed to the Trust’s chairwoman, Vimala Sawmy.

Devarajen Kanaksabee, president of the Rann Nou Later Movement, praised this decision, calling it highly symbolic.

The movement was formed after the previous government decided to take back the land in 2023.

At that time, Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth’s government aimed to repurpose the land, which was allocated to the Tamil Cultural Centre, for new medical and educational development projects.

An alternative site in Côte-d’Or was proposed to the affected associations.

The 2023 decision sparked anger from Rann Nou La Terre, which called it unfair and threatened legal action.

They argued the government was acting illegally, despite having a development permit issued in 2020.

A gratitude celebration is scheduled for tomorrow at Skanda Court in Port-Louis to honor those who fought for this cause.
