20,000 Mauritians Fight Cancer; Tobacco Still a Major Threat
There are currently 20,000 cancer patients in Mauritius, a concerning figure highlighted by the Minister of Health. Many of these patients are smokers, pointing to a strong link between smoking and cancer cases on the island.
While the World Health Organization (WHO) has praised Mauritius for its efforts in anti-tobacco initiatives, Minister Anil Bachoo emphasized the ongoing danger.
He stated that smoking is a leading cause of not only cancer but also heart disease and diabetes.
In recognition of its work, Mauritius received a special award from the WHO on World No Tobacco Day 2025.
This award highlighted the country’s continued efforts to protect public health.
However, the minister warned that the tobacco industry still targets young people through clever advertising, flavored products, and strong social media presence.
The WHO award acknowledged the dedication of the Ministry of Health, civil society, and NGOs.
Still, with 20,000 Mauritians battling cancer, it’s clear that the fight against tobacco and its health impacts is far from over.
