Drive Loud, Face Penalties: Mauritius Cracks Down on Noisy Vehicles

The National Land Transport Authority (NLTA) has issued a warning about excessive noise caused by some vehicles on the island’s roads. The agency says this issue has become a nuisance for many residents, especially in the evenings.

In a statement released on Friday, May 30, the NLTA explained that loud engine noises disturb people living along busy streets. Media reports often feature complaints from upset citizens.

The NLTA reminded vehicle owners that, under the 2010 Road Traffic Regulations, it is strictly forbidden to:

  • Install any device or extension on the exhaust system that increases noise;
  • Modify the muffler to make it louder;
  • Use a vehicle in a way that produces unnecessary noise that could have been avoided with reasonable care.

The authority urged all vehicle owners to follow these regulations and keep noise levels in check.
