A week after Mauritius and Britain signed a treaty recognizing Mauritius’s sovereignty over the Chagos Islands, Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam held the first meeting to plan the upcoming visit to the archipelago. The meeting focused on arrangements needed for the trip.

Attending were Deputy Prime Minister Paul Bérenger, Attorney General Gavin Glover, and Olivier Bancoult, leader of the Chagos refugees’ group. Ramgoolam explained:

“This is the initial meeting to establish the steps for organizing the visit. We need to decide who will be part of the delegation, how many people can go, and what transportation will be used to reach the islands under the Mauritian flag.”

He added that the cabinet would be briefed on the arrangements on Friday morning before an official announcement is made.

Olivier Bancoult expressed optimism about the meeting’s significance.

“We are very satisfied. This shows the government’s clear intention to involve the Chagossians.

For the first time, we will be able to step on our homeland. We are eagerly awaiting this moment.

It will happen. We are working together, sharing ideas, and we are confident we will visit the Chagos before the year ends,” Bancoult said.
