The construction of three retention basins in Dakri, Bambous, has now surpassed 70% completion. Minister of Infrastructure, Govindranath Gunness, visited the sites on Tuesday to assess progress and provided additional details on the project, which aligns with the government’s national strategy to implement flood mitigation measures.

The project involves the development of three basins with a combined capacity of 150,000 cubic meters, at an estimated cost of approximately Rs 400 million.

The scope includes installing drainage systems, such as separation drains and the modernization of culverts.

Construction of more such basins

During the site visit, Minister Gunness highlighted that similar basins have been successfully constructed in other parts of the country, demonstrating their effectiveness in reducing flood risks.

He also emphasized that these basins will serve to collect water that can be repurposed for irrigation and other uses, offering potential benefits for the arid region of Dakri. The Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to flood mitigation following the severe floods that devastated the area in December 2023.

The Minister praised the collaboration with the Medine Group for implementing the project and expressed optimism about continued support from the Rivière-Noire District Council and local community stakeholders, which he said are vital to completing the project promptly.

Nuvind Khednah, Director of the Land Drainage Authority, outlined the project, which is being carried out in three phases. Once completed, it aims to protect approximately 1,000 residents, as well as local roads and industrial zones.
