After 50 Years, Chagossians Celebrate Hope & Justice Returned

The Chagossian community celebrated the signing of a significant agreement with enthusiasm, marked by music and fireworks.
The deal involved the return of the Chagos Archipelago to Mauritius by the British government. This event took place on Thursday, May 22, and is a milestone in their history.
After more than 50 years of struggle, the UK has officially recognized Mauritius’s sovereignty over the Chagos Islands.
As a result, the Chagossians will finally have the opportunity to return and live on their homeland.
The moment was described as historic and was further commemorated with champagne at the Chagos Refugees Group office in Pointe-aux-Sables.
