2 Nations’ Historic Chagos Agreement Restores Justice & Security
On May 22, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued a statement regarding a recent agreement between the United Kingdom and Mauritius concerning the return of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius.
Rubio emphasized the importance of the partnership between the U.S., the UK, and Mauritius, stating:
“The United States values its partnership with the United Kingdom and Mauritius.”
Although the U.S. is not a party to this agreement, Rubio noted that the U.S. remains responsible for the operations of the American naval base at Diego Garcia.
He highlighted that this base plays a crucial role in supporting deployed operational forces and enhancing security throughout the region.
Rubio also expressed the U.S. commitment to continue collaborating with both nations to promote peace, security, and prosperity in the Indian Ocean and beyond.
He congratulated the UK and Mauritius for their leadership and dedication to ensuring that Diego Garcia remains fully operational throughout the duration of the agreement.
