Secret Cannabis Lab Busted: Rs 2.9 Million Worth of Plants Seized
On Monday, May 19, 2025, the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (ADSU) discovered a hidden cannabis lab inside a house in Pailles. The operation involved 59 cannabis plants cultivated in a specially equipped indoor setup, estimated to be worth nearly Rs 2.9 million.
The house, a large two-story building on Avenue Bulloram, Les Guibies, was used as a sophisticated cultivation site.
Law enforcement officials had monitored the property after neighbors reported a strong smell of cannabis regularly emanating from the premises.
During the raid, officers found a converted room filled with high-tech equipment.
The space included 13 LED grow lights, nine ventilation outlets, four air filters, nine extractors, four column fans, multiple plastic containers with fertilizers, and a cooling unit.
The plants, measuring between 69 and 94 centimeters, were mostly ready for harvest and grown in buckets within the room.
Officials seized the plants and equipment, estimating the total value at Rs 2.9 million.
Behind the house’s respectable appearance, police uncovered a professional indoor cannabis laboratory designed to optimize plant growth while avoiding detection.
A 30 year-old suspect was arrested at the scene. He is the brother of the house owner.
The suspect was brought before the Port-Louis court on May 20 and temporarily charged with drug dealing and cultivating cannabis plants.
He remains in police custody as investigations continue.
Authorities believe the operation might be part of a larger network. They are exploring whether Kurmally acted alone or with others, and further searches could take place soon.
The case highlights ongoing efforts to crack down on local illegal cannabis production disguised as legitimate residential activity.
