Bhanoodutt Beeharee, former chairperson of the Local Government Service Commission (LGSC), and four former board members—Premchand Tanakoor, Purnima Rawottea, Reshad Bhaukaurally, and Jean Bruneau Dorasami—were granted bail on Tuesday, May 20th.

They appeared before the Curepipe Court. All five are temporarily charged with “Public official using office for gratification,” under the Prevention of Corruption Act (PoCA) and the FCC Act.

Each of them had to provide two sureties of Rs 50,000 and sign a debt acknowledgment for Rs 1 million.

They are required to report to the nearest police station every Tuesday and Saturday between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. and must not contact witnesses involved in the case.

Magistrate Shavina Jugnauth presided over the hearing.

The five individuals were arrested yesterday, 19th May and released on parole as part of an investigation into the alleged illegal hiring of over 1,700 employees in local authorities last year.

The government is claiming these recruitment procedures were unlawful. According to Local Government Minister Ranjiv Woochit, Bhanoodutt Beeharee alone was responsible for hiring 1,731 people.

Last week, more than 1,700 employees received termination letters related to this case.
