Public Service Digital Blueprint Nears Completion: 3 Key Transformations Ahead

Mauritius is close to finalizing a national plan to modernize its digital services across government, hospitals, social security, and the private sector. The blueprint aims to eliminate lost files, reduce long queues, and improve efficiency through digital systems.

The plan, currently in its final stages, will be officially launched by the end of May.

It focuses on making public services more accessible and positioning the country as a regional tech hub. The strategy has three main goals:

  1. Improving Government Operations: The first focus is on digitalizing internal government processes. This includes better electronic communication between ministries and public institutions to make administration faster and less paperwork.
  2. Providing Better Services to Citizens: The second part aims to digitize services like the National Land Transport Authority (NLTA), social security, and e-Health projects in the Health Ministry. Citizens will soon be able to access their medical records and services online, reducing paperwork and wait times.
  3. Strengthening Government and Business Ties: The third goal is to support local tech companies and attract digital investments. The blueprint includes measures to grow the tech ecosystem and encourage private sector participation.

The development of this blueprint involved consultations with government agencies, private companies, startups, universities, and the public.

Since January, different stakeholders have contributed ideas, and a draft was prepared in March. Public feedback was gathered through a chatbot and email, allowing citizens to share their expectations.

Beyond service improvements, the government highlighted two key issues: cybersecurity and artificial intelligence (AI).

New regulations will be put in place to protect citizens’ data and ensure responsible use of emerging technologies.
