Bhanoodutt Beeharee, former chairman of the Local Government Service Commission (LGSC), was arrested on Monday, May 19.

The arrest followed an interview with the Financial Crimes Commission (FCC) his role in recent district council recruitment practices.

Beeharee is temporarily charged under Article 22 of the FCC Act for “Public Official Using Office for Gratification.”

The story made headlines last Friday 16th May when it was revealed that temporary employees had been dismissed.

Four other former board members of LGSC were also detained and will appear in court in Curepipe on Tuesday, May 20.

Local Government Minister Ranjiv Woochit stated that Beeharee alone oversaw the recruitment of 1,731 employees between January 1 and October 3, 2024, without the board’s approval, as required by law.
