On Sunday, May 18, Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam issued a strong call for unity in Mauritius during celebrations marking the 100th anniversary of the Shri Simhadri Appanah Devaalayam Temple in Beau-Vallon.

He also issued a warning to “arsonists” and “vultures” on social media who aim to sow division and discord among the people.

Ramgoolam emphasized that Mauritius’s strength lies in its diversity, and that all religions have a rightful place on the island.

He recalled his father Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam’s famous phrase: “Unity in diversity”, which he said remains a guiding principle for the nation and a model for the world.

During the event organized by the Mauritius Telugu Maha Sabha, the Prime Minister praised the humble beginnings of Indian immigrants to Mauritius, who arrived with little material wealth but brought a rich cultural legacy that continues to thrive today.

He highlighted that the land where the temple was built in 1925 was once part of sugar plantations in Riche-en-Eau and Beau-Vallon.

Ramgoolam: “What truly matters in life are your deeds.”

“They didn’t have to give us this land, but they did. We should thank them. Mauritius is a country of sharing—a rainbow nation,” he said.

Ramgoolam also reflected on the sacrifices involved in public service, reminding candidates that their time on earth is temporary.

“What truly matters in life are your deeds, not your bank account or possessions,” he emphasized.

He concluded by calling on cultural leaders to stay away from politics and expressed hope that, even in another hundred years, the Shri Simhadri Appanah Devaalayam temple will continue to shine brightly and serve as a beacon of hope and unity for the community.
