US Tariffs: Mauritius Seeks Intervention from Trump, 5 Key Strategies for Survival

Parliamentary Debate and Diplomatic Efforts
It was on Tuesday, 13 May, during a tense session of the National Assembly, that Ramgoolam addressed a Private Notice Question posed by Joe Lesjongard, who sought clarity on the profound impact of the US tariffs.

The Prime Minister’s voice echoed with concern as he revealed that a high-level working session had already convened at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, uniting representatives from the Mauritius Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI), the Mauritius Export Association, and Business Mauritius.

These consultations underscore the gravity of the situation.

Seeking Dialogue with the United States
In a decisive move, Ramgoolam disclosed that he had personally written to President Donald Trump on 10 April, seeking to open negotiations for a new bilateral accord that might mitigate the damage.

The government’s diplomatic efforts continued as ministers Ritish Ramful and Adil Ameer Meah sent letters to the US Trade Representative (USTR).

The USTR advises the President on trade, manages negotiations, resolves disputes, and enforces global trade policies.

Positive Feedback and International Outlook
Encouragingly, Ramgoolam revealed that the Mauritian government has received positive feedback from the USTR, a beacon of hope amid what he described as a “very, very challenging” economic landscape.

Mauritius now has its sights set on the upcoming US-Africa Business Summit 2025, scheduled to take place in Luanda, Angola, from 23 to 27 June.

This summit will gather over 1,500 delegates—including presidents, government leaders, ministers, and top executives from both sides—to explore avenues for expanding trade, investment, and strategic alliances between the United States and Africa.

Acknowledging Challenges and the Path Forward
Acknowledging the formidable hurdles ahead, Ramgoolam did not shy away from the gravity of the situation.

The imposition of these tariffs has plunged the Mauritian economy into uncharted waters, testing the resilience of a nation already striving to maintain its economic footing.

Yet, he urged patience, emphasising that consultations are ongoing, both locally and internationally, and that the government is carefully awaiting the insights gleaned from these dialogues before charting its course.

Upcoming Economic Reforms and Strategic Plans
Amidst this turbulence, the Prime Minister announced that a new economic programme is on the horizon.

Plans are afoot to implement comprehensive reforms aimed at bolstering the nation’s resilience against external shocks.

These reforms will focus on safeguarding the market, enhancing food security, and harnessing technology and innovation to drive productivity—an ambitious blueprint to secure a prosperous future in uncertain times.

Sectoral Discussions and Future Proposals
Amidst a barrage of questions from the opposition leader, Ramgoolam affirmed that discussions are already underway within the country’s key sectors, with particular attention to the textile industry, which faces the greatest peril from the current tariffs.

The nation now awaits the forthcoming proposals from these deliberations, hopeful that diplomacy and strategic innovation will steer Mauritius through these turbulent waters toward calmer shores.
