Government Accelerates Plans for Points Licence System to Curb Reckless Driving
In a firm statement that underscores its commitment, Osman Mahomed, Minister of Land Transport and Light Rail, has affirmed that the government will proceed with reintroducing the points licence system. The announcement was made on Monday, 12th May, amid ongoing reflections on a tragic chapter in the nation’s history.
The date also marks the 50th anniversary of the devastating accident at Rose-Belle, which resulted in the deaths of 15 individuals and left a lasting impact on the national consciousness. The incident involved a truck, infamously known as “the mad truck of Rose-Belle,” which became a stark reminder of the critical need for stronger road safety measures.
During a memorial ceremony honoring the victims, Mahomed emphasized the government’s resolve to prevent similar tragedies. He announced that he will chair a committee meeting on 13th May, involving representatives from the Prime Minister’s Office and the police force, to fast-track the implementation of the points licence system.

“Every effort is being made to ensure that the points licence becomes a reality as swiftly as possible,” Mahomed stated, his tone resolute. The system aims to assign penalty points to drivers for violations, with the goal of improving discipline and reducing accidents.
As the country reflects on the losses of the past, the reintroduction of the points licence system is seen as a crucial measure to enhance road safety and save lives. The government’s unwavering stance signals a determined push to make roads safer for all.
