2 Alzheimer Patients Victims of Sexual Abuse at Senior Care Facility
Disturbing allegations of abuse have emerged at Fieldview Care Home, a facility housing 43 residents in Maison Blanche, Mon-Goût. The care home, which has been operating unlawfully for nearly two years, came under investigation after an unannounced visit by Minister of Social Integration, Social Security, and National Solidarity, Ashok Subron, on Sunday, 11th May.
The investigation uncovered grave concerns, including reports of sexual abuse involving two residents aged 70 and 63, both suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.
One of the accused, a fellow resident, has been transferred to Brown-Séquard Hospital under police supervision, while the care home’s manager has been arrested in connection with the allegations.
Authorities have also moved to protect the remaining residents, with 13 of the 43 residents relocated either to their families or to other care facilities.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage and calls for urgent reform within Mauritius’s elderly care sector.
Minister Subron condemned the abuse and emphasized the need for stronger oversight and public infrastructure to safeguard vulnerable seniors.
“It is imperative that we take immediate steps to ensure the safety and dignity of our elderly population,” he stated, urging the public to report any mistreatment or neglect in care homes.
The scandal has highlighted significant gaps in regulation and oversight, prompting renewed focus on protecting some of the most vulnerable members of society.
An investigation continues as authorities seek accountability and reforms to prevent future abuses.
