In a turn of events, the Supreme Court witnessed the withdrawal of a contentious legal challenge on Friday, 9th May 2025, as the former Police Commissioner, Anil Kumar Dip, stepped back from his opposition to the bail granted to activist Bruneau Laurette. The case unfolded before the esteemed judges, Aruna Narain and Raj Seebaluck, who presided over the proceedings with an air of gravitas.

At the call of the case, legal representatives for the former Commissioner, Mes Ravi Yerrigadoo and Sharmila Sonah-Ori, informed the court of their decision to withdraw the challenge.

In a swift response, Principal State Counsel, Me Shakheel Bhoyroo, appeared on behalf of the newly appointed Police Commissioner, requesting the court to formally dismiss the application.

The court, in its wisdom, granted this request, bringing an end to the legal skirmish.

Bruneau Laurette, the activist at the centre of this legal storm, was ably represented by Me Rouben Mooroongapillay.

The origins of this case trace back to 21st February 2023, when Anil Kumar Dip sought to contest the Moka Court’s decision to grant bail to Laurette.

The former Commissioner had previously requested an extension of the 7-day period stipulated by the Bail Act to file an appeal in the Supreme Court, citing adverse weather conditions as the reason for his delay.

This withdrawal marks a significant moment in a saga that has captivated public attention, highlighting the ongoing tensions between law enforcement and civil activism in a climate of heightened scrutiny and debate.
