Lifeline for Parents & Students: State to Cover 2 Examination Fees, SC & HSC

In a move that has brought a sigh of relief to many anxious parents, the Minister of Education, Mahend Gungaparsad, announced on 2nd May that the government will shoulder the financial burden of examination fees for students resitting the School Certificate (SC) and Higher School Certificate (HSC) examinations. This initiative, set to take effect in the academic year 2025, aims to alleviate the financial strain on families as their children strive for academic success.

Details of the Government’s Circular

In a circular dispatched to secondary school heads on Thursday, 8th May, the Ministry of Education elaborated that the government will fully cover the examination fees for the SC, HSC, General Certificate of Education (GCE), and National School Certificate (NSC) for students in Grades 10 to 13.

This generous provision applies to candidates sitting these examinations for the first time or those attempting them for a second time, although it is crucial to note that the number of attempts must not exceed two.

Eligibility and Application Procedures

Moreover, students from lower grades wishing to take these examinations may also avail themselves of this financial support, provided they meet the eligibility criteria and secure approval from their school’s administration.

It falls upon the secondary school authorities to communicate the eligibility requirements and the necessary forms to the parents or guardians of the students.

Attendance Monitoring and Eligibility

Additionally, school officials are tasked with monitoring the attendance of all students in Grades 10 to 13, as an absence rate nearing 10% could jeopardise a child’s eligibility for the examination fee subsidy.

This initiative not only underscores the government’s commitment to education but also highlights the importance of attendance in the pursuit of academic achievement.
