Ivor Tan Yan has raised the alarm over an alleged case of unlawful detention involving a Malagasy worker at the Compagnie Mauricienne de Textile (CMT). The union representative claims that the employee in question had tendered his resignation the previous day for personal reasons and was scheduled to visit the Labour Office the following morning, accompanied by Tan Yan himself.

However, it has emerged that the employer allegedly issued an order preventing the worker from leaving the premises.

It was only after the intervention of the relevant authorities that the employee was finally permitted to exit.

Yet, according to Ivor Tan Yan, the worker’s passport and work permit were allegedly confiscated during this ordeal.

CMT: No Comment

The Malagasy employee has since lodged a formal complaint with both the Labour Office and the police, citing unlawful detention.

When approached for a comment, Sunil Dowarkasing, the administrative director at CMT, declined to provide any statements regarding the matter.

However, he did confirm that both the Labour Office and the Passport and Immigration Office have initiated an investigation to shed light on this troubling incident.
