Tomeshwarnath Ramlowat’s Rs 31.9 Million Fraud Against the MRA Uncovered
In a scandal that has sent shockwaves through the corridors of power, the Financial Crimes Commission (FCC) has unveiled a colossal fraud amounting to Rs 31.9 million, perpetrated against the government’s “Prime à l’emploi Scheme” administered by the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA). Tomeshwarnath Ramlowat, a former employee of State Informatics Limited, stands accused of orchestrating a sophisticated scheme that involved claiming grants for 285 fictitious employees.
The Complex Web of Fraud
On Monday, 5th May, the nefarious activities of Ramlowat came to light, culminating in his arrest.
Investigations revealed that he had established eight companies, where he served as the sole director and shareholder.
Through these entities, he allegedly solicited and unlawfully obtained salary subsidies provided by the scheme, which amounted to as much as Rs 15,000 per month for full-time employees and Rs 7,500 for part-time workers.
However, upon thorough verification, all 285 purported employees categorically denied ever being hired or receiving any funds through this fraudulent scheme, which spanned from April 2023 to February 2024.
Tracing the Ill-Gotten Gains
The FCC’s meticulous tracing of the money trail has uncovered that a staggering Rs 14.7 million was directly transferred into Ramlowat’s personal bank account.
It is alleged that he utilised these misappropriated funds to invest in overseas real estate, acquire a luxury vehicle—now seized—and engage in cryptocurrency speculation, particularly through the Binance platform.
A Defiant Denial & Legal Fallout
During his interrogation, with legal counsel from Me Arshad Inder, Ramlowat vehemently denied all allegations against him.
He has since been detained at the Moka Detention Centre and is set to appear in court on Tuesday 6th May, facing charges of financial fraud under the FCC Act.
The unfolding of this case raises pressing questions about oversight and accountability within government schemes designed to support employment, as the spectre of corruption looms large over the nation.
