The search for Jean François Célestine, a 65-year-old man reported missing since 1st May, has culminated in tragedy. His lifeless body was discovered on 3rd May in an overgrown field near the Colonel Maingard metro station in Barkly, just two days after his disappearance.

The grim discovery was made around 10:45 am, when Célestine’s brother, who had been tirelessly searching for him, stumbled upon the body.

The police of Barkly were promptly alerted and arrived at the scene, located a mere 150 metres from the metro station.

There, they found Célestine lying face down, dressed in a grey jacket, jeans, and brown sandals.

The identity of the deceased was confirmed by his brother, who had reported him missing to the Curepipe police on Thursday, 1st May.

According to his brother, Célestine, who was unemployed and struggled with addiction issues, had not been in contact for several days prior to his disappearance.

It was during his search in the Barkly Metro Station area that he made the heart-wrenching discovery.

Dr Prem Chamane, the forensic pathologist, was called to examine the scene, and the body was subsequently transported to the Victoria Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

However, the post-mortem examination conducted on the morning of Sunday, 4th May, failed to ascertain the cause of death.

In the wake of this tragedy, local police have been conducting interviews with several residents in the vicinity as part of their investigation, yet no significant leads have emerged thus far.

The body has since been returned to the family for funeral arrangements.
