Municipal Elections: All Ready for the 4th May

The Electoral Commission stands poised for the municipal elections set to unfold this Sunday, 4th May. In a significant logistical operation, the ballot boxes were transferred to police stations across the five affected cities on the morning of Friday, 2nd May. A staggering 426,975 ballots have been printed, ready to capture the voices of the electorate.
To ensure the smooth conduct of this pivotal democratic exercise, approximately 6,134 officers will be deployed.
Thirty Returning Officers will oversee the proceedings across the 30 wards: eight in Port-Louis, six in Beau-Bassin/Rose-Hill, five in Curepipe, five in Quatre-Bornes, and six in Vacoas-Phoenix.
A total of 404 candidates are vying for the honour of representing their communities in this crucial poll, with 400,887 registered voters called to the ballot box.
In a bid to facilitate the voting process, 124 schools will serve as polling centres across the 30 districts, opening their doors at 7 o’clock in the morning and remaining accessible until 5 o’clock in the evening.
On this occasion, 914 classrooms will be transformed into voting booths, a testament to the scale of this electoral undertaking.
In a historic first for municipal elections, the counting of the ballots will occur on the same day as the voting.
This unprecedented move will see the counting commence less than an hour after the polling stations close.
Notably, Port-Louis boasts the highest number of voters, with 114,354 registered, while Curepipe lags behind with a mere 59,912 electors recorded.
As the nation prepares to cast its votes, the atmosphere is charged with anticipation, marking a significant moment in the democratic journey of the country.
