Air Belgium Bankruptcy Leaves Mauritius Tourists Without Refunds

Air Belgium SA was declared bankrupt on Wednesday, raising concerns that thousands of travellers who purchased tickets for flights to Mauritius and South Africa may face difficulties securing refunds.
The airline confirmed that approximately 10,500 tickets purchased for travel after 3 October 2023 — the date on which Air Belgium ceased its passenger services — are now affected.
This development comes after the airline halted passenger operations, leaving many with unfulfilled bookings.
A spokesperson for Air Belgium told Belga News Agency that “the remaining claims, such as airline tickets that have not yet been refunded, are now part of the claims under the authority of the receiver.”
This indicates that affected customers are now dealing with the airline’s insolvency proceedings, which complicates the refund process.

The bankruptcy was officially declared by the commercial court of Walloon Brabant on Wednesday. The court also announced that the French logistics group CMA CGM would take over Air Belgium’s cargo operations, but the passenger services remain unresolved amid the insolvency.
Travellers holding tickets to Mauritius and other destinations are advised to stay alert for further updates and to contact their ticket providers or legal representatives for guidance on their rights and potential claims.
